Playdate

I met Midori, a model and photographer in Hokkaido, Japan, through social media in 2023. It didn’t take long after finding her account to understand she is person with creativity and curiosity flowing through her veins. She posts a steady stream of photos taken by photographers from all over Japan. However, it’s Midori’s open-ended, experimental approach to self-portraiture that sets her apart.

Most models and portrait photographers focus on the familiar, classical aesthetics of beauty. Midori uses her whole body, imagination, light, texture, objects, and movement to reinvent herself as artwork.

During a trip to Hokkaido, I contacted her to see if she was open to meeting and taking a photo walk. She kindly accepted and drove us to a spacious modern art park with lots of facilities for kids to play. The day began with grown-up conversations about life and creativity. It ended as two grown-up children exploring and taking photos
in the playground.
